Traveling Tips - Getting There Comfortably

Planning a trip soon? Everyone gets excited about the prospect of planning a trip - your ultimate destination, your hotel accommodations, your side trips or excursions, and for the women - what are you going to wear??!!! No one really gives thought to how to stay healthy and comfortable while en route so you can enjoy your vacation. Whether you're driving several hours or flying long distances you should keep the following tips in mind so you can thoroughly enjoy our trip when you get there:

While driving or flying you should:

• Wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes;
• Avoid crossing your legs while seated;
• If you're flying, get up from your seat and walk up and down the aisle at least once an hour. (If you're pregnant, request an aisle seat so that you can get up easily);
• If you're driving, stop as often as possible to stretch your legs;
• Drink at least 8 ounces of water every hour or two. It's best to avoid alcohol, caffeinated beverages, and salty foods;
• If you can maneuver some space in front of you, exercise your feet and ankles throughout your journey; and
• If you have any risk factors for deep-vein blood clots, you may want to consult your physician regarding the need for support socks or stockings.

No matter whether you're traveling by car or plane, crossing time zones often leads to jet lag, which can result in headaches, upset stomach and nausea, difficulty concentrating, and trouble sleeping. To help avoid jet lag consider these tips:

• Get plenty of sleep before you begin your trip;
• Keep well hydrated before, during, and after your flight; and
• Change your wristwatch to the new time.

As soon as you arrive at your destination, adjust your sleeping and eating schedule to the new time zone. This can be difficult if you've crossed many time zones, but try to force yourself to stay awake until the local bedtime, and get up in the morning and get outside in the natural light. If you just can't stay awake until evening on the day you arrive, nap for no more than one hour or two. Getting involved in social activities can also help your body clock adjust. When trying to stay awake, eat protein and vegetables and avoid starchy foods like pastas, breads, and rice. And remember to continue drinking lots of water!

Enjoy your trip!!
